Electric gates in Derry, in short
Coast Data Security installs electric gates in Derry, the walled city on the River Foyle close to the border with County Donegal. Because Derry is around 95 road miles from our Castlewellan base, surveys are booked in advance and trips planned around a run of local jobs. We fit CAME or BFT automation with safety edges, photocells, fobs and app access.
Local knowledge
Gates for the way Derry is laid out.
Derry is split by the River Foyle into the Cityside, inside and around the old walls, and the Waterside on the opposite bank, joined by the Craigavon Bridge and the Peace Bridge. Terraced streets close to the city centre and estates on both sides of the river tend to have short driveways and tight frontages, so an underground swing motor or a compact sliding gate is usually the better fit than a wide swing pair that would overhang the pavement.
Further out, towards Eglinton, the Buncrana Road and the rural stretches close to the Donegal border, properties sit on longer lanes with more room and, often, no power at the gate itself. A sliding gate run from a solar kit suits these entrances well, and because a Derry job is a full day's trip from our base, we plan a survey to cover several enquiries in the same visit where we can.
Planning and the trip
What to know before you book a survey in Derry.
Planning sits with Derry City and Strabane District Council. Automating an existing gate does not need permission, but a new gate or fence more than one metre high next to a road, or more than two metres elsewhere, can, and parts of the city within the historic walls and its conservation areas carry extra conditions on new structures. We flag this at the survey rather than after the posts are in.
Because Derry is the furthest town on our list from our Castlewellan base, we are honest about timing. Surveys are arranged in advance rather than same-day, and installation visits are planned to make the most of the trip, so the programme we give you at quote stage reflects a genuine travel day on each side of the work, not just the hours on your driveway.
How it works in Derry
From your call to the first time it opens
- 1
Enquiry and a booked survey
Call or send the form. Because Derry is a longer trip from our base, we book the survey date with you in advance, then visit to measure the opening, check the ground, the posts and where power can come from.
- 2
Written quote
A written recommendation follows, covering sliding or swing, the motor, the access devices and the safety kit, priced up front with no obligation.
- 3
Groundworks and power
Posts, a track or motor foundation, cable ducting and a mains feed or solar kit, coordinated so the electrical and any masonry work happens in one planned visit.
- 4
Fit, programme, force-test
The motors, control board, photocells and safety edges are installed, then the gate is programmed and force-tested for a smooth, safe action before we leave site.
- 5
Handover and aftercare
The fobs, the app, the intercom and the manual release are explained, the paperwork is handed over, and we stay reachable by phone for servicing and future additions.
Typical Derry entrances
What usually suits which kind of property
A survey decides it, but these are the patterns we see most across the city and the Foyle valley.
| Property | Usual gate type | Power and access |
|---|---|---|
| Terraced house in the city or Waterside | Underground swing motors so the pillars stay clean | Mains, fobs, GSM intercom |
| Estate home with a short run-in | Sliding gate so the car clears the road quickly | Mains, fobs, keypad for the family |
| Rural house towards Eglinton or the border | Sliding gate on a cantilever rail | Solar kit or armoured mains run, fobs and keypad |
| Business premises near the city centre | Heavy sliding gate with a timed close | Mains, keypad with staff codes, camera on the entrance |
