What electric gate installation involves
Electric gate installation is the fitting of a motorised operator, safety devices and access controls to a new or existing driveway gate, so it opens and closes from a fob, keypad, intercom or phone. Coast Data Security surveys the entrance, specifies the right sliding or swing system, installs the power and automation, and hands over a gate that is safe, quiet and simple to use.

No two driveways in County Down or County Antrim are the same. A rural lane with a sloping entrance needs a different gate to a townhouse in Belfast with a short run-in from the road, and a farmyard needs something that will stand up to tractors, livestock and salt air. That is why every job starts with a site survey rather than a price list.
We automate new gates and, where the leaves and posts are sound, we can automate the gate you already have. Sliding gates run along a ground track or a cantilever rail and suit wide or sloping entrances. Swing gates hang on posts or pillars and suit level drives with room behind the gate line. Either can be single or double, and either can be run from mains power or a solar kit where there is no supply nearby.

Most of our customers want three things: to open the gate from the car without getting out, to let a visitor or delivery in from the house or from their phone, and to know the gate will never close on a child, a dog or a bumper. We build all three in. Remote fobs and keypads handle everyday use, a GSM or video intercom lets you speak to whoever is at the gate and release it remotely, and a smartphone app gives you control and a log of who came and went.
On the safety side, automated gates in the UK are expected to meet the force limits in BS EN 12453. We fit safety edges on the closing leaf, photocells across the opening and, where the layout calls for it, a second pair of photocells on the inside, so the gate stops and reverses the moment it meets an obstruction. A manual release means you can still open the gate by hand in a power cut.

Groundworks and power
Posts, a track or foundation for the motor, ducting for cables and a mains feed or solar kit. We coordinate any electrical or masonry work so it happens once, in the right order.

How much does electric gate installation cost?
Every gate is priced after a free site survey, because the cost depends on the gate itself, the motor type, whether power is already at the entrance and which access devices you want. You get a written quote with everything itemised and no obligation to go ahead.
Can you automate the gates I already have?
Often, yes. If the leaves are square, the posts or pillars are solid and the gate swings or slides freely by hand, we can usually add motors, safety devices and access controls. If the gate is worn we will tell you honestly and quote for a replacement instead.
Do I need planning permission for an electric gate in Northern Ireland?
Automation itself does not need permission, but the gate might. In Northern Ireland a new gate or fence over one metre high next to a road, or over two metres elsewhere, can need planning approval. We flag it at the survey so you can check with your council before work starts.
What happens in a power cut?
Every motor we fit has a manual release, so you unlock it with a key and open the gate by hand. Battery back-up units are available for CAME and BFT systems if you want the gate to keep working through an outage.
Can I open the gate from my phone?
Yes. A GSM intercom lets you answer the gate and release it from your mobile wherever you are, and app-connected control boards let you open, close and check the gate from your phone. Fobs and a keypad are still fitted for everyday use.
There is no power at my gate, can you still automate it?
Most rural entrances do not have a supply at the gate. We can run an armoured cable from the house or an outbuilding, or fit a solar kit with a battery so the gate is independent of the mains. The survey works out which is cheaper and more reliable for your site.
How long does an installation take?
A straightforward automation of an existing gate is usually a day on site. New gates with posts, groundworks and a power run take longer and are planned around the masonry and electrical work. We give you a realistic programme with the quote.
Are electric gates safe with children and pets?
They are when they are installed properly. We fit safety edges that stop and reverse the gate on contact and photocells that hold it open while anything is in the beam, and we force-test the gate at commissioning in line with BS EN 12453.
Sliding or swing, which is better?
Neither is better, one will suit your entrance. Sliding gates cope with slopes, wide openings and short run-ins. Swing gates suit level drives with room behind the gate and pillared entrances. The survey settles it.
Will the gate work with my CCTV or intercom?
Yes. Because we install CCTV, access control and gate automation, the gate intercom, a camera on the entrance and your door entry can all sit in one system and one app, rather than three separate ones.
Do you service gates that someone else installed?
We do. We can service, repair and upgrade existing CAME and BFT systems and most other makes, and we can add fobs, keypads, intercoms or safety devices to a gate that was fitted without them.
